The Intruder
A man in a gleaming white suit comes to a small Southern town on the eve of integration. He calls himself a social reformer. But what he does is stir up trouble. Trouble he soon finds he can’t control. This might well be Roger Corman's best movie but it is deeply uncomfortable to watch. Those who know Corman as a fantasy and horror director will be surprised here. This is a strong political movie about racial intolerance, a low-budget production, shot in black and white with no big stars (William Shatner was not famous just yet). Shatner does a great job as a person who shows the hatred and ignorance of humans with his words but in doing so things get way out of hand. Many will no doubt be offended by the use of the N word which is said frequently throughout the movie. It's a sensational, gripping masterpiece that should be seen by everybody in how not to treat human beings.

Barry McKenzie Holds His Own
Barry McKenzie’s Aunt Edna is kidnapped by Count Von Plasma, the vampire head of an isolated Eastern European dictatorship who mistakes her for the Queen of England and thinks that kidnapping her will draw tourists to his country. Barry and his mates set out to rescue her and bring her back to Australia. The first Barry McKenzie movie did well so here he is - back in his 2nd adventure! A totally un-PC comedy and all the better for it. Also the movie that turned plain ol' Aunt Edna Everage into Dame Edna. Full of crude and low-brow humour, it does have it's fair share of good laughs until it starts to run out of steam in the final 30 mins. It presents a somewhat endearing yet over-the-top parody of broad Australian stereotypes i.e constantly drinking Fosters beer cans. This is the 1st movie I've seen the late Clive James take part in. There are a number of cameos from the likes of John Le Mesurier, Roy Kinnear, Frank Windsor and Donald Pleasance plays Count Plasma although I can't say he's that funny in the role. Many will be offended by the sexist, racist and homophobic language used but this movie was a product of it's time. It's amusing enough to warrant a watch.

Godzilla vs. Kong
In a time when monsters walk the Earth, humanity’s fight for its future sets Godzilla and Kong on a collision course that will see the two most powerful forces of nature on the planet collide in a spectacular battle for the ages. A truly dreadful movie. I expected the script to be functional, maybe terrible, but it spent so long explaining pointless exposition for the ridiculous story and not a single joke landed. Godzilla was boring. Kong was a joke. The fight in Hong Kong was okay for a bit. But there's almost nothing redeeming in this. It was a very painful experience watching this. Is this all we expect from blockbusters these days? The special effects that people seem to be raving about weren't even that good and with poorly written characters it all felt hollow and empty. The acting by the entire cast was crap. Please Hollywood, don't go near Godzilla or Kong ever again as you can't do a decent movie with them. What else can I say other than it was horrible.

Hyper Sapien: People from Another Star
Three aliens from the planet Taros land on Earth and are befriended by a Wyoming rancher’s son. This sci-fi movie is aimed squarely for kids but whether they'll be able to stay interested throughout it all is another matter. Whilst it has a 3 legged 3 eyed cute alien pet Kirbi to make them laugh, the rest of the movie is filled with a lot of tepid drama, boring scenes of people wandering around the woods, and an annoyingly unnecessary love triangle that’s never even allowed to play out properly. The two alien girls are charming enough and there's even a heartthrob in Ricky Paull Goldin for young girls to swoon for. However, there's not enough excitement in this movie to keep you occupied. A fairly bland movie in the end.

Lt. Col. Iceal “Ham” Hambleton is a weapons countermeasures expert and when his aircraft is shot over enemy territory the Air Force very much wants to get him back. Hambleton knows the area he’s in is going to be carpet-bombed but a temporary shortage of helicopters causes a delay. Working with an Air Force reconnaissance pilot, Capt. Bartholomew Clark, he maps out an escape route. Based on a real life event, this is another of those late 80's Vietnam War movies which relies on the performances of its actors rather than a hail of action, blood, and bullets. It's different from many of the other Vietnam movies as the leading character has a conscience and frequently tries to avoid bloodshed especially civilian lives. It's a fairly straightforward war movie but the acting of Gene Hackman and Danny Glover sets it above the rest. The script is also intelligent so you're not going to get a gung-ho guns a-blazing story. Overall, a great movie to sit back and watch the some of the more unique tactics used to survive in bad situations.

Act of Vengeance
A group of women who have all been attacked by the same hockey mask wearing rapist, get no help from the police. So they band together to form a vigilante group called “The Rape Squad”, and set about going after the local scum. This colourful and early representation of the notorious rape-revenge sub genre is just so-so for trash movie fans. It's both trashy and humorous (intentional and otherwise) and will possibly make you uncomfortable during some of the lowbrow moments the movie occasionally revels in. As a 70's curio movie, it never gets quite as down and dirty as it could have, but it definitely flies low where taste is concerned and is bound to offend some viewers with its many unsettling scenes. It never gets above average at best.

Bloody Kids
Two bored 11 year old boys hatch a plan to stage a knife fight between one another outside a football ground. When one is then is accidentally stabbed for real in the scuffle it sets off a chain of events that only further their thrill, rather than frighten them into explaining it was all a joke. This 1979 collaboration between two of the UK’s brighter rising talents in writer Stephen Poliakoff and director Stephen Frears is a bit of a strange affair which is set in Southend. It mostly follows one of the boys Mike who is on the run from the police and meeting some colourful characters whilst his 'friend' Leo is in hospital deceiving the detectives quizzing him about his stabbing. It's a very bleak affair and the movie is populated by unlikable characters. The story is apparently a metaphor for the gloom that the UK was under during the dying days of the Callaghan/pre Thatcher era. There are a couple of familiar faces who would go on to bigger things such as Gwyneth Strong, Gary Olsen and Gary Holton. Even Mel Smith turns up as a nightclub bouncer. I don't think this is a movie for everyone as it is rather dark but I found it an interesting experience.

The Hillside Stranglers
Two cousins begin a reign of terror in Los Angeles by murdering a string of women. This movie charts the infamous true life case of the Hillside Stranglers which took place between 1977 and 1978. It's a bland movie which never gets going to be honest. Instead of focusing on the gory murders, the movie centers on the detectives hunting the suspects by adding character drama and some relationship crap which slows the story right down. The movie also goes on for way too long. Richard Crenna does his best with a tired script. You do get to see a young Billy Zane playing one of the murderers. Quite a boring movie overall.

American Commando Ninja
David, a young Ninja is recruited by his master to steal the formula for a viral weapon. He is pitted against two wily opponents – a KGB operative and Martin who has kidnapped a scientist who destroyed millions of lives through his bacterial experimentation in World War II and has developed the new lethal serum. Martin’s intentions are not honest as he wants the virus for himself in his bid to dominate the world. A God awful Taiwanese martial arts movie by none other than the King of crappy movies in Godfrey Ho. This movie makes no bloody sense whatsoever. The acting is terrible, the script is pathetic and the fights are badly choreographed. The characters are poor which includes a Chinese woman who wears an extremely 80's yellow top with Confederate flag shorts! It is what it is - an ultra cheap trashy pile of shit. All copies of this movie should be sent to the refuse dump!

Several ordinary high school students go through their daily routine as two others prepare for something more malevolent. Don't let the title fool you. This movie doesn't have an elephant in it, but it has a deep meaning that will make your head feel like mush after thinking about it too long. There's no point in me spoiling what unfolds other than the fact it is shocking. Now this movie isn't for anyone and those who are expecting a normal movie structure with three parts, well you are not going to get that. Gus Van Sant directed this movie in a way that it has a depressing and lonely feel to it. The directing in this movie is really excellent. The acting by the young cast was all great but there's no denying the movie leaves you hanging cold. Definitely put this on your list of movies to watch.

A Hill in Korea
Out on a routine patrol during the Korean War, a small group of British soldiers find that Chinese troop movements have cut them off from their own lines. They try to fight their way back to safety but with the enemy surrounding them on all sides, the prospects look bleak. Facing almost insurmountable odds, they decide to stand and fight. This war movie was shot on location in the mountains of Montejunto, in Portugal, as it was supposedly similar to Korea. It is notable as the first major feature movie to portray British troops in action in the Korean War. It's a tense movie as the troops shelter in an abandoned Buddhist temple and try to hold out in the place as the Communists bear down on them. A lot of the movie is about the internal battle between the soldiers as some dislike one another. The main performers are Stanley Baker and Ronald Lewis but watch out for early roles for Michael Caine and Robert Shaw. It's a worthwhile watch for fans of the traditional British war movie, but by no means the best example of the genre.

Bedroom Eyes
A young businessman, out jogging one night, sees a beautiful woman undressing in her bedroom window and he is compelled to return every night to watch her, until one night he witnesses a murder in the same apartment and soon becomes the prime suspect. This Canadian thriller has a similar premise to Hitchcock's Rear Window and while it's better scripted it's not nearly as enjoyable. That's not to say this movie isn't good because it is. The story plays out pretty much as expected, and a plot twist in the final third can be seen coming a couple of miles away. There is a hint of eroticism running through the story and the acting by the cast is more than adequate. You might not get much out of this movie but it's definitely watchable enough.

Cage (1989)
A GI in Vietnam saves his buddy’s life, but in the process is shot in the head. The injury results in brain damage to the point where he basically has a child’s brain in a man’s body. When they get out of the army the two open up a bar together, but some local gangsters make things tough for them after they refuse to take part in brutal cage matches where fighters battle to the point of serious injury and/or death. This movie is best known for teaming up two actors best known for portraying Marvel heroes in Reb Brown (Captain America) and Lou Ferrigno (The Incredible Hulk). For a movie about cage fighting, the fights are simple and short, with nothing spectacular about them at all. It’s a far cry from the many other underground fighting movies that were prevalent around this time. It's a pretty pacey movie with a lot going on from start to finish but unfortunately the action isn't that hot. I know that Lou Ferrigno might not be the world's greatest actor but I did like him as the gentle giant in this movie. This movie is the perfect example of a movie to watch on a wet Sunday afternoon. It's not great but it's not too bad either.

Alienator
Kol is an evil man about to be executed on a distant spaceship. He manages to escape on a shuttle and make his way to some woods in America. The commander of the spaceship decides to send out The Alienator to execute Kol at all costs. This is another glorious train wreck from director Fred Olen Ray. A mind bending lo fi sci-fi action spectacle that borrows heavily from The Terminator. In true Olen Ray fashion the viewer is given a dramatic and cheesy movie chalked full of great practical FX, cheap set designs, neon lasers and a wonderful synth score. It also shows how low Jan-Michael Vincent had fallen since Airwolf to take part in this crap fest. Female bodybuilder Teagan Clive who is all muscles plays the Alienator. You're more than likely to laugh at this movie than anything else. If you want a look at an unintentional comedy, give it a go!
