Earthbound
A family of space aliens crash lands on Earth when their spaceship conks out. An abysmal sci-fi/comedy which was supposed to be a pilot for a TV series that never happened. This is supposed to be a light-hearted family-friendly tale not unlike Disney live action movies of the 1960s and 1970s (the Witch Mountain movies). However, it's bereft of comedy; or more accurately, it's bereft of comedy that is actually funny. The alien family even have a green skinned pet chimpanzee that is supposed to eat light bulbs (though you never see him eat one). James L. Conway directs this movie with zero style and energy. Even with the military in pursuit of the aliens, there is nothing of any excitement and tension to be had. Burl Ives and the rest of the cast are OK in the roles but sadly this movie is like a wet blanket and makes for a fairly bland viewing experience.

The Nightmare Never Ends
Police detective, Mitchell, investigating the death of a victim of a Nazi concentration camp discovers a nightclubbing playboy who has strange powers over women and is seemingly ageless. What can be said about this terrible movie? Well, it's not a quality movie I'll say that about it. Everything about it is bad: acting, dialogue, script, cast, cinematography, etc are all way below average. It's a truly wretched movie of cataclysmic proportions. The script tries in some ways to mimic The Omen in that Satan is amongst us on Earth and taken human form. I found the movie to be so boring and was totally uninteresting. Nothing to recommend here at all.

Looks and Smiles
Thatcherism and the Irish troubles provide the backdrop for this study of Mick, a well-meaning youth from Sheffield. Mick lives with his parents, works on his motorbike, looks for work, and every two weeks gets his check from the dole. There are no jobs. Then at a disco he meets Karen... Understated black and white drama by Ken Loach about the impact of Thatcherism (in this case, deliberate mass unemployment) on a young man and the community around him. Never preachy or sanctimonious, it simply reflects the realities of working class life. All of the cast are unknown actors (as with many of Loach's movies) and it feels like the story is showing real people not actors playing characters. Despite the depressing storyline and the ending on a freeze frame in a dole queue, I felt this was a really good movie showing how life was in the UK at this time in the early 80's. Recommended.

The Spider
Teenagers from a small town find a massive spider living in a cave. The inhabitants of the town must find a way to destroy it. A rather disappointing monster movie which is about as scary as a loose elephant running around town. And what's with that crazy sound effect the spider makes? Do spiders roar?? There isn't even any explanation even for the existence of the big spider. What's even with the title - it's just a small town taking on the arachnid not the entire world. It's a bad movie that is easy to dissect for all of its absurdities, but can also be enjoyed on an extreme camp level, whether it be the ludicrous situations or the high school students played by bad 30 something year old actors. Worth a watch if only to see how stupid a movie it is.

St. Helens
Mount St.Helens has lain dormant for many years until one day she blows her top. This is the movie dramatisation of the Mount St. Helens eruption that took place in May 1980 - the deadliest and most economically destructive volcanic event in U.S history. It centers on the small town of Cougar and it's residents who are not that far away from the mountain. The signs are all there that the mountain is going to explode but some of the residents which include crusty old timer Harry Truman refuse to budge from where they live. It all builds up to the last 15 mins which is devoted to the explosion itself, with an eclectic mix of footage and stills of the actual eruption, stock footage, and some ropey effects. All of which completely fails to get across the sheer awesome might of the event. Good acting from the entire cast but the standout is Art Carney as Harry Truman. In the end this is an entertaining disaster drama with a lovely score by Italian band Goblin.

The Crawling Eye
An American investigator for the U.N., a German scientist and a British reporter join forces to investigate a series of disappearances and mutilation-deaths confined to a Swiss mountain and involving a thick, mobile cloud, a telepathic girl, an animate dead man, and tentacled, one-eyed beings from another planet. This British made sci-fi horror movie was released in the US under the more sensationalistic title of The Crawling Eye! It's a fairly decent little effort, the setting helps with it's small isolated village and hazardous mountain terrain and the actual alien monsters are kept off screen until the last fifteen minutes which helps build suspense because when they do make an appearance the special effects are not very good at all. The story moves along at a decent enough pace and has a nice mix of horror and sci-fi but I wouldn't call it a classic. Warren Mitchell dons a dubious accent as a scientist working at an observatory high up on a mountain. Overall, it's a perfectly fine way to pass 80 odd minutes but not much else, plus it's fairly predictable.

Alien Nation
A few years from now, Earth will have the first contact with an alien civilisation. These aliens, known as Newcomers, slowly begin to be integrated into human society after years of quarantine. Back in the day, Alien Nation was a bit of a big deal although the series didn't last that long. I can't believe it's taken me this long to finally watch it. This is the pilot movie that started it all. To be honest, it isn't that different from any other buddy cop movie you've ever seen except that this one has aliens in it. It's crammed with clichés, but is lifted out of the ordinary and given serious intent by the choice of James Caan in the starring role. The chemistry between himself and his alien partner develops well. Both actors deserve good marks. A barely recognisable Terence Stamp has a lot more to offer than he was required here. A poor climax though which should have been a lot more exciting than what it was. An entertaining though predictable romp on the whole.

Dangerous Davies: The Last Detective
When D.C Dangerous Davies, not held in high regard by his superiors, is assigned to find a notorious criminal kingpin, he uncovers the details of 15 year old cold case in which a 17 year old girl mysteriously vanished. I'm not sure why this is classed as a comedy as it isn't really that. It's a criminally under seen thriller and one of the more intriguing crime dramas I have seen in quite some time, with an absorbing, well-written script by Leslie Thomas. The brilliant Bernard Cribbins gives a wonderfully full-blooded performance as the eternally crumpled, frequently drunk, remarkably canny copper Davies, along with the dogged crime solving capabilities he is a remarkably endearing copper and is capably assisted in his investigation by his loyal civilian friend Mod Lewis. The gripping storyline will keep your interest until the end. Along with Cribbins, there are appearances from Bill Maynard, Maureen Lipman, Joss Ackland, Bernard Lee and even the 6th Doctor in Colin Baker. It's a shame that Bernard Cribbins wasn't given more of these type of roles as he excels in this one. Well worth taking a look.

Traveller
A divorced couple, living hand-to-mouth in Stockholm, must first pay their hotel bill before returning to England. To raise the necessary funds, they must pretend that they’re still married. Real life husband and wife Googie Withers and John McCullum star in this comedy about a divorced couple who, thanks to post-war restrictions on money taken out of the country, are stuck penniless in a Swedish hotel. It was based on a play but due to it still running in the West End the movie was released two years later, by which time the topical subject was out of date. Nevertheless, it’s a charming and cute movie that works due to the chemistry between the leads and a witty script. It’s stage origins are apparent, but it was still enjoyable.

Quest for the Mighty Sword
When Prince Ator becomes 18, he gets a mighty sword from the mean sorcerer gnome Grindl, to free the Goddess Dehamira and her people. On his journey he has to fight against dragons and other fantastic figures. The 4th in the Ator series and surely the worst of the lot. It takes the franchise to new depths of ineptitude. Prince Ator gets to fight a siamese robot and then a poor man's mini version of Godzilla in a cave. It has to be seen to be believed just how shit they do this sequence. I cannot tell you how really terrible this movie is. From the dreadful acting to the pathetic action sequences to the nonsensical plot - everything sucks big time! It's just a cheap and shoddy movie. Nobody in their right mind should ever see this movie as it will give you brain rot. Avoid!

Deadly Strangers (1975)
After she misses her train, a young woman is forced to hitch a ride back to town. After managing to get away from a lecherous trucker, she is given a ride by a good-looking but somewhat mysterious young man, who she comes to suspect may be a dangerous escapee from a mental asylum. A great tale by director Sidney Hayers with a more grown up role for Hayley Mills. Didn't even know she had done a topless scene in her movies until I saw this. Hayers has the difficult task of keeping us gripped by two people traveling by car through the British countryside. The viewer may think he knows all there is to this tale but with a couple of red herrings and a twist near the end, it will definitely keep you glued to the climax. The movie often immerses the viewer into the lurid pasts of both leads and most of the characters Mills comes in contact wants to bed her! While the subject matter can be a bit sordid, its not as violent (or as sleazy) as it could've been. The performances from the two leads are solid. If you want to see a movie involving murder, voyeurism, bikers, road rage, nudity with a twist ending then give this a go.

The Frozen Dead
A crazed scientist keeps the heads of Nazi war criminals alive until he can find appropriate bodies on which to attach them so he can revive the Third Reich. The plot of this movie feels full of potential, but rather than concentrate on the pseudoscience or crazy scientist, the story instead spends the vast majority with the niece who goes amateur sleuthing when her friend disappears without a trace. Anna Palk is okay in the role, but given that the viewer knows what is going on and is always one step ahead of her, there is nothing exciting or intriguing about her investigation. Some of the severed head imagery is pretty good with glowing blue lights, and the initial descriptions of the freezing and resurrecting processes are fascinating, but once the niece becomes the centre of the story it goes downhill. A shame really.

The Being
Toxic waste dumping in a small Idaho town turns a young boy into horrible mutant monster. The town’s police chief and a government scientist team up to stop the monster, which is quickly killing off the town’s citizenry. Martin Landau and Jose Ferrer get top billing in this ridiculous piece of 80's trash. It is is one of the sorriest, most random pieces of crap you're ever likely to witness. The movie opens in promising style, a Twilight Zone narration leading into a splatteriffic scene in which a teenager gets his head yanked clean off by a mutant. From then on, it all goes seriously pear-shaped. While some of the hokey gore is admittedly fun, The Being is just too scatter-shot, disjointed, and slapdash to work as a whole, even if it's supposed to be a lightweight piece of tongue-in-cheek schlock. Not worth bothering with.

The Real McCoy
Karen McCoy is released from prison with nothing but the clothes on her back. Before being incarcerated Karen was the bank robber of her time, but now she wishes for nothing more than to settle down and start a new life. Unfortunately between a dirty parole officer, old business partners, and an idiot ex-husband she will have to do the unthinkable in order to save her son. A largely forgotten heist movie directed by Russell Mulcahy. It begins with an interesting set-up before slowing down a little bit before it picks up again in the second half as the heist operation at a big bank goes down. It’s a decidedly familiar premise to many viewers but Mulcahy delivers a good enough caper movie that benefits substantially from its smattering of engrossing sequences and the uniformly engaging performances with Kim Basinger in the leading role ably supported by Val Kilmer and Terence Stamp. All in all, this was a decent thriller which does deliver on excitement at times. Worth a watch.

Tiger Bay
In Tiger Bay, the docklands of Cardiff, rough-and-tumble street urchin Gillie witnesses the brutal killing of a young woman at the hands of visiting Polish sailor Korchinsky. Instead of reporting the crime to the authorities, Gillie merely pockets a prize for herself — Korchinsky’s shiny black revolver — and flees the scene. When Detective Graham discovers that Gillie has the murder weapon, the fiery young girl weaves a web of lies to throw him off course. This is a movie that I’ve been aware of since I was very little, but one that I’ve never got round to watching until now. It is a thoroughly entertaining and suspenseful crime thriller, with some Hitchcockian flourishes, and an overall solid sense of direction thanks to J Lee Thompson. Father and daughter John and Hayley Mills take two thirds of the leading roles with Horst Buchholz taking the other. Bucholz's onscreen chemistry with Hayley Mills (who was 12 years old at the time) is fantastic. Even though he's a killer, the story leads you to view Korchinsky as a victim rather than a villain. The movie doesn’t pull its punches but keeps a nice balance between the darker tone and lighter moments. Overall, this is a very good movie with a brilliant debut from a young actress that would light the big screen up with her performances in the future.

The Beast of Yucca Flats
A refugee Soviet scientist arrives at a desert airport carrying secret documents, but is attacked by a pair of KGB assassins and escapes into the desert, where he comes in range of an American nuclear test and is transformed into a mindless killing beast. A total shitfest! Quite rightly considered as one of the worst movies of all time. This movie is very short, but it seems like a very long movie. It is pointless, tedious and nobody should have ever thought of it. If you don't believe me, you'll just have to take my word for it because there is no way I would recommend this to any sane human being. There's barely any story, the acting is awful, the scenes are boring and the characters are unnecessary like the entire movie. For the rest of my life I will stay as far away from it as possible!
