A small boy, Dickie Goodwin, finds some strychnine pills mixed with sweets in a stolen car left in a deserted garage. With them he buys his way into the Rocket Gang. Brian, the leader, shares out the pills for swaps next day. One of the gang eats hers and collapses. The police frantically search for the pills and a broadcast appeal is made.
A great CFF movie showing a snapshot of a bygone era when derelict buildings were the playgrounds of small children, and when mothers would happily leave their pre-teen child with an instruction that there was something in the oven for tea. The story motors along at a decent pace with the climax taking place at the now gone Battersea Fun Fair which will bring back memories for Londoners of a certain age. The moral of the story is never take and eat any sweets unless they're from a shop. Some familiar faces in the movie include Warren Mitchell, Leslie Dwyer and the breakout star in a young Sally Thomsett. On the whole, it's an enjoyable family adventure.

When a plot against a prominent Middle Eastern politician is uncovered, David Pollock, a professor of ancient hieroglyphics at Oxford University, is recruited to help expose the scheme. Pollock must find information believed to be in hieroglyphic code.
A movie that tries to be both a suspense and a spy spoof, but doesn't entirely succeed at either. The movie is a series of unlikely plot twists, general confusion, and Sophia Loren wardrobe changes. And at the end, any attempt to make sense of the story will only cause you to realise it makes even less sense than you thought. Gregory Peck and Sophia Loren are good in their roles. In the end, it's a fun cheesy movie but it isn't special by any means.

A boy kills his mother’s cat out of jealousy, and she proceeds to punish him for the deed for the rest of his life. When the boy grows up, gets married and has a child of his own, his mother begins scheming on how to destroy the marriage. However, she herself has a few skeletons in the closet...
This Tyburn psychological horror starring screen legend Lana Turner is one strange tale and it's much maligned among movie fans due to the over-deliberate pacing and the fact that there’s a sense of absurdity underlying much of the action in the movie. It doesn't have a pleasant storyline and it's awful seeing the evil mother torment the child so much. The focus is mostly on the persian cat Sheba and the role it may or may not have in the deaths that occur throughout the movie. Lana Turner delivers a solid performance with Ralph Bates also doing well as the tortured son. Parts of the movie are interesting but on the whole it's just about average.

Hennessy is an Irish explosives expert who believes in peace, but who has had connections to the IRA. Hennessy’s family is accidentally killed by the British army in Belfast, and he plots revenge, setting out to blow up the Houses of Parliament in London.
This is a pretty decent thriller that attracted a lot of media attention and notoriety when it was released and some cinemas refused to show it because of its IRA theme and the Queen’s appearance in newsreel footage. It has a well crafted story with a good cat amd mouse game between the police and the IRA in trying to stop Hennesey from completing his mission during the final third. The compelling Rod Steiger is great in the leading role with solid performances from a decent cast of reliable actors such as Lee Remick and taut direction from a capable action film-maker in Don Sharp. A young Patrick Stewart (complete with some hair) has a tiny 5 min cameo in the first third. All in all, this is a grim, layered little revenge drama given a big boost by Rod Steiger's quiet turn. It's worth a look.

Russell has been expelled from several schools for lewd, crude and nude conduct. Busterburger University is his last chance at education and satisfying his disappointed parents.
A comedy movie more entertaining than it has any right to be, it features a absolutely goofy vibe, a cast of familiar B-faces and filth that is not off-putting somehow. The basic plot is pure formula and one you've seen in Police Academy etc but it does have a valid commentary on the fast food industry even today. The acting by the cast isn't half bad but the one that stands out most is Dick Butkis. There are numerous sight gags that are funny in this movie. As long as you don't expect too much, you'll have a great time watching this movie.

Popeye is a super-strong, spinach-scarfing sailor man who’s searching for his father. During a storm that wrecks his ship, Popeye washes ashore in the fishing village of Sweethaven and winds up rooming at the Oyl household, where he meets Olive. Before he can win her heart, he must first contend with Olive’s fiancé, Bluto.
This is one of the first live-action movie adaptations of a cartoon and it isn't that good. As soon as the town of Sweetwater broke out into song about a minute into the movie, I knew I came to this woefully unprepared. It tries to be a mix of things and none of them work - the comedy is poor and the music is just plain awful. Then there is the cartoonish movements and sound effects that will only appeal to young kids. It's true that the characters, the set and costume design are good and the actors’ performances stay true to the cartoons but it's everything else that's the problem especially the script and it goes on for too long. Robin Williams and Shelley Duvall do the best they can but even they can't save this movie so unfortunately I didn't really like it. If you want to see some Popeye adventures, check out the old cartoons and don't bother with this one.

When the young, good-looking Joe Orton encounters the older, more reclusive Kenneth Halliwell at drama school, he helps the allied spirit and they begin an affair. As Joe becomes more contented with his sexuality and commences to find achievement with his writing, Kenneth becomes progressively estranged and envious, eventually tapping into a hazardous anger.
This is the story of British playwright Joe Orton in Stephen Frears’ tragi-comedy-drama charting his doomed relationship with his lover Kenneth Halliwell. Gary Oldman and Alfred Molina both give very good performances in their respective parts as Joe Orton and Kenneth Halliwell. The script is written to a decent standard by Alan Bennett as he makes the movie good to follow and creates some humour too, meaning the movie never takes itself too seriously. The pace of the story is a little slow at times but that's only a minor criticism. Overall, despite the pacing, this is a very decent biographical drama, due to the very good performances from the two leads. Definitely worth a watch.

Jerry, his girlfriend Angela, and their friend Harold take a trip to a local seaside carnival, but when the carnival’s fortune teller, Madame Estrella, predicts death for someone close to Angela, strange things begin to happen.
The title might be long and great but the movie is entirely forgettable and boring. There is really nothing redeemable about this very low budget movie. Once it gets going, it is tolerably bad and at least 75% of it seems to be nothing more than a showcase of women singing and dancing. This adds nothing to the plot. The acting is flat and terrible. Had it not been for the title, this movie would have faded into obscurity a long long time ago. You might want to take a look if you're curious about the cult following this movie has but you'll instantly regret it afterwards!

A British schoolteacher who became a pacifist during WW1 finds trouble in a conservative Canadian town.
An interesting tale of a handsome but outspoken English teacher whose outspoken views on the evil of war causes a ripple in a town. The story has several levels: on one it's about a love triangle but it's also a much more multi-layered study of a society and world where silent rules and conventions dictate everything. David Warner performs well in the lead role with Honor Blackman as an alcoholic in a supporting role. The movie did not do well on release but 16 years later it was re-done by Martin Scorcese and was more favourably received by the general public. It's a good little movie which deserves to be seen more by people.

An aristocratic widow discovers that her former lover, a medical officer in the British army, is secretly a German spy.
A terribly cheap WWII espionage b-movie with nothing to recommend about a remote clifftop castle and the sinister Nazi official lurking around inside. It has boring dialogue and stilted, grimacing performances. The heroes in the movie are so stupid that they repeatedly allow the main character to win the upper hand simply by doing nothing, and the ending is rushed. The only good thing about this is that it's merely an hour long. I would definitely avoid it.

Two teenage girls Debbie and Sue want to join the cool surfer gang at school and succeed in doing so. Their pastime mainly consists of doing what everyone else does – watch the surfing boys and have sex with the same surfing boys.
A so-so Aussie teen movie. The characters in the story are vapid, crass people who are unable to hold any type of interesting conversation. Their parties are lifeless affairs where they aimlessly sit around and get drunk because they have nothing better to do while the sex is shown to be an unpleasant experience for the girls who get pressured into doing it before they’re ready and leave feeling used afterwards. There isn't that much drama taking place although one of the characters thinks she is pregnant. There is also an uncomfortable scene showing a quiet girl being coerced into having sex with 3 guys in their van. The movie could have been better if more humour would have been added. In the end, it was just average for me.

Dortmunder and his pals plan to steal a huge diamond from a museum. But this turns out to be only the first time they have to steal it…
Starring Robert Redford and George Segal in the lead roles, this has many good things going for it. Instead of a run of the mill crime caper we get a well scripted movie that has fun oozing from every frame. As the movie progresses, the crooks lurch from one bad luck scenario to another and it's impossible not to side with our charmingly unlucky thieves. Redford and Segal play off each other very well. Amongst all the hilarity, the movie has a cool 70's vibe to it with director Peter Yates finding a happy medium between comedy and crime drama. It may not be an Oscar winning movie but I thought it was very enjoyable.

Three men are vying for the job of director at a small engineering company with two of the men even going so far as playing dirty tricks on each other in order to get the job.
This is an interesting movie all about the three candidates gunning for a job. Donald Pleasance plays a meek fellow who is having an affair with his secretary, Harry H Corbett who believes as he is married to the managing director's sister he'll get the post and the very confident and young William Franklin. The movie portrays each of their home lives as well as what happens at work. It isn't a surprise to the viewer when the managing director announces to the three who is successful but whatever victory the winning candidate gets as a result of this is a hollow one as one of his first duties is being forced to fire one of the workforce. The closing scene showing the new director stuck at his desk and having to work throughout the weekend is a bleak one to end the movie. The three leads are great with the best being Donald Pleasance playing a sad loser. An enjoyable movie overall.

A group of men reunite for a trip to the forest to remember a friend that was killed but encounter a menacing presence in the woods that’s stalking them.
This is a competent and conceptually confident British horror movie that does manage to crank up the tension without relying on false or obnoxious jump-scares, instead using its ominous musical score and foreboding to create a slow-building sense that there's something sinister lurking amongst the trees. When the movie moves into the final third, it starts to lose its way a little. The closer it comes to the ritual, the less tense and unique it gets. I liked the design of the ginormous god-like creature though it is shown a bit too much near the end. Good acting by the main four leads. All in all, a great and really creepy movie that I enjoyed.

It is the Second World War. The Nazis have invaded Britain. There is a split between the resistance and those who prefer to collaborate with the invaders for a quiet life. The protagonist, a nurse, is caught in the middle.
A fairly interesting but ultimately bland 'what if?' movie. It took 8 years for this movie to be made. One of its most important qualities is the way it allows us to understand how the Nazi philosophy is allowed to take root and to spread, and the movie manages to show this happening in a very plausible way; I liked in particular the way it plays up to the fears of the English people by emphasizing the threat of Communism, thus making it seem that they are really on the same side fighting the same enemy. What I found the most chilling was seeing Nazi soldiers walking outside Parliament and other locations in London. The plot of the movie mostly revolves around a nurse who joins a national socialist organisation for work even though she's not happy about doing it. Slowly over the course of the movie, the viewer sees her change her views about socialism and the Nazis and how she thinks it's doing the power of good in the country. I found a lot of the movie rather tedious and boring. Overall, even though it had a lot of good ideas, this movie didn't have enough to hold my interest and the pacing was too slow. Average at best.
